Dagestan: A Russian Republic on the Caspian

Dagestan is a republic of Russia located in the North Caucasus region. It is bordered by the Caspian Sea to the east, Azerbaijan to the south, Georgia to the southwest, and Chechnya and Ingushetia to the west. Dagestan is a mountainous republic. The Caucasus Mountains run through the center of the republic, and the highest peak, Mount Bazarduzu, is 4,466 meters (14,652 feet) above sea level.

Dagestan is a diverse republic, with over 30 ethnic groups living within its borders. The largest ethnic group is the Avars, who make up about 29% of the population. Other major ethnic groups include the Dargins, Lezgins, Kumyks, and Russians. Dagestan has a long and rich history, dating back to the ancient Greeks. It was part of the Persian Empire, the Arab Caliphate, and the Russian Empire. Dagestan became a republic of the Soviet Union in 1921, and it became a republic of Russia in 1991.
