Suspect in custody, police say

CANTON, Ohio (WOIO) - A 21-year-old man is under arrest after Canton Police said he crashed a stolen car into an ice cream shop Sunday afternoon.

What happened?

The crash happened around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 12, 2023 in the 2000 block of Tuscarawas St. W in Canton.

According to police, the man was driving a stolen Kia Forte when he crashed into the front of Handel's Ice Cream. The crash caused significant damage to the store.

Police said the man was taken into custody at the scene. No one was injured in the crash.

The suspect's identity

The suspect has been identified as 21-year-old Michael Smith of Canton. He was arrested and charged with receiving stolen property.

Additional charges are possible, police say.

Smith is expected to appear in court on Monday, March 13, 2023.
